Chinaclay Weddings - Holly & Flo

Late November is a great time to get married. The sun is shining and it’s warm without being overly hot. Peonies are in season! It’s generally a pretty fabulous time of year. I had all of this in mind when my friend Holly, a fellow florist, asked me to do her wedding flowers.

Holly and Flo’s wedding was in Austinmer just south of Sydney. A beautiful coastal location where they had planned an outdoor ceremony with the scenic coastline as its backdrop.

The only tiny, miniscule, most insignificant detail?

That day happened to bring the worst storm in 40 years!

After driving down the coast in some pretty interesting weather, including but not limited to, science-fiction-grade fog, we arrived at our destination to install the flowers for the now decidedly INDOOR ceremony.

Holly and Flo’s colour scheme was blush, white and pink with hints of copper. To achieve a soft, freeform style, we used curved copper beech branches, white peonies, quicksand roses, café au lait dahlias and mocha phalaenopsis orchids, among others.

The ceremony, held at the Headlands Hotel, was held in a glass walled function room, with the wind whipping the trees around us. The atmosphere of the wild weather, and the special light that was cast over us, combined with the soft florals to striking effect.
